1 Enoch (Book of the Watchers)
Mostly 3rd–1st century BCE; Aramaic fragments at Qumran
A Jewish apocalypse that shaped how many second-Temple people imagined angels, injustice, and a coming repair. Jude quotes it. Ethiopian Christians kept it in the canon. Fragments in Cave 4 mean Jesus’ world knew Enoch’s voice.

But with the righteous He will make peace… And He will help them all, and light shall appear unto them, and He will make peace with them.
Meaning
The opening blessing promises peace, help, and light, and the pages that follow tell of violence and of the earth crying out. Hope with open eyes is the tone. You can pray the peace without pretending the watchers’ harm was small.
Historical context
The Book of the Watchers is mostly third-century BCE Jewish apocalyptic, written in Aramaic under Hellenistic rule. Pieces were copied at Qumran. The full collection survived in Ge‘ez because the Ethiopian Church kept it in the canon.
Jude quotes Enoch by name, which is why Western churches never quite forgot it even when printers dropped it. The English here is R. H. Charles, 1912, public domain and labeled. The verse sits in a theophany: God comes, and the righteous are met with mercy rather than with the judgment aimed at violence.
Ways to interpret
Historical
Second Temple literature, older than the gospels, known in the caves and in Ethiopia. Jesus’ world could hear this voice. It is not a late curiosity.
Contemplative
Receive the blessing, then make one peace that tells the truth about harm. Light in the verse is for people who are not fine.
Canonical conversation
Ethiopia’s canon and Jude’s citation are both data. Yahad reads the blessing as scripture without forcing every church’s contents page to match.
