Gospel of Mary

The Savior’s farewell, kept and told by Mary of Magdala

Jesus teaches that the Son of Man is within you, and that the community must not lay down extra laws. Mary holds the words when the others lose their nerve.

Gospel of Mary

The Son of Man is within you. Follow him. Those who seek him will find him. Go, and preach the good news of the kingdom.

Meaning

The teaching says the Son of Man is within you, so following is not a chase across the sky. Sin is a turning, not a stain God cannot touch. Extra rules after the Savior’s departure bind the makers of those rules. Mary keeps the words when panic starts.

Historical context

Mary Magdalene is a resurrection witness in the four gospels. This shorter book, Coptic at Nag Hammadi plus a Greek fragment, remembers a fight after the farewell: Peter asks her for the teaching, then doubts her, and Levi takes her side. The manuscript is late. The memory of her authority is early.

The conflict is about witness and about law laid down beyond what was given. That pattern shows up wherever a community trusts the calm man and silences the one who actually heard. Read the dialogue with the morning scenes in the other gospels, as one argument about memory, not as a replacement canon invented to win a modern point.

Ways to interpret

Historical

A dialogue about authority in a circle that already knew Mary, Peter, and Levi. The doubt and the defense are both in the text.

Contemplative

Following the one within is a turning, not a new law to police other people. Drop one extra rule you added this month.

Women’s witness

Ask who in your community holds a memory you were trained to doubt. Levi’s question still stands: will you listen, or add a rule instead?
