Qumran Beatitudes (4Q525)

Blessed-sayings were at home in Jewish wisdom long before Matthew 5. 4Q525 blesses the one who seeks Wisdom and refuses slander. Set beside Jesus’ Beatitudes, you can hear both kinship and a shift: Jesus names the poor, the meek, and the peacemakers.

Blessed is the one who speaks truth with a pure heart and does not slander with the tongue. Blessed is the one who seeks Wisdom and walks in the law of the Most High.
Meaning
These blessings train the tongue and the search for Wisdom. They do not yet name mourners or peacemakers. That difference is the interesting part. Kinship of form, shift of guest list: you can love both scrolls without forcing them to say one sentence.
Historical context
4Q525 is Hebrew, from Cave 4, fragmentary, a wisdom text of the Qumran library in the late Second Temple period. Modern brackets mark reconstruction. The “blessed is” pattern also appears in Proverbs and Sirach, where Wisdom is often a woman who can be sought.
The caves came to light in 1947 and the years after. This manuscript is one leaf of a much larger library of Jewish books, biblical and otherwise. Set beside Matthew 5, it shows the form was at home before the gospel. It does not show that Jesus copied a single damaged scroll word for word. We do not have that evidence.
Ways to interpret
Historical
Second Temple wisdom in Hebrew, physically broken, socially at home among Torah-centered Jews. The form is the fact. A word-for-word dependence is a guess.
Contemplative
An hour without slander, including private slander, will teach you how much of religion is speech.
