Secret Book of James
A discourse of the risen Jesus to James and Peter
Jesus teaches fullness: be filled, so you will not be diminished. The kingdom is a seed that must fall into the earth.
Secret Book of James
Be filled, so you will not be in want. Those who have received life and have been filled will not be diminished.
Meaning
Fullness is offered so that want and diminishment do not get the last word. A seed must fall into the earth or it stays alone. Prayer and endurance belong to that fullness. The risen teacher will not leave James and Peter half-awake.
Historical context
The book is a Coptic revelation discourse from Nag Hammadi, presenting the risen Jesus with James and Peter. James’s name carries the authority of the brother who led the Jerusalem church. The manuscript is fourth century. The Greek original is earlier. A precise year is not something the evidence pins down.
Seed imagery and farewell tone put the discourse beside the gospel parables and beside John 14–17. Persecution is mentioned as part of the path, not as a fascination with suffering. Reading it as scripture means James remains a hearer, not a footnote to later apostles people find easier.
Ways to interpret
Historical
A post-resurrection dialogue treasured in a community that loved James. Use it beside the gospels, with the date left honestly open.
Contemplative
Name one emptiness and ask to be filled, without a speech. A bowl is not a verdict.
Communal
Staying alone to avoid loss is the seed that never falls. Fullness in this book is spent, not hoarded.
