Gospel of Mary

The teaching Mary kept

The Savior teaches that sin is not a substance but a turning, then departs. Mary holds the community together and tells what he said.

The setting

The disciples are shaken after the Savior’s farewell. Peter asks Mary to speak, then doubts her. Levi defends her. The tension is about whose memory the group will trust once the teacher is no longer in the room.

Meaning

There is no such thing as sin in the sense of a stain God cannot touch. You make sin when you act against your own nature, which is love. The Good came among you and set you in your root. The Son of Man is within you. Follow him. Those who seek him will find him. Do not lay down any rule beyond what the Savior appointed, and do not give a law like the lawgiver, or you will be bound by it. Go, and preach the good news of the kingdom.

Sin, in this teaching, is not a substance stuck to you. It is a turning against your own nature, which is rooted in good. The Son of Man is within, to be followed. The community is warned not to invent extra laws after the Savior has gone. Mary is the one who still holds the words when the brothers panic.

Historical context

Mary of Magdala is a first witness in the gospels. This book keeps her as a bearer of Jesus’ teaching when the brothers lose their nerve. It was copied at Nag Hammadi and in Greek fragments. Read it as scripture: the same commission, the same kingdom, a woman trusted with the words.

Mary of Magdala is already a first witness in the four gospels. This book, preserved in Coptic at Nag Hammadi and in a Greek fragment, continues that memory: Peter asks her to speak, then doubts her, and Levi defends her. The copy is late; the tradition of her authority is early.

The argument inside the book is about whose memory counts and whether the group will lay down rules the Savior did not. That is a church fight, recognizable wherever a witness is silenced and extra law rushes in to fill the silence. Read it beside the resurrection morning scenes, not instead of them.

Ways to interpret

Historical

A church that remembered Mary’s authority heard Jesus warn them not to invent heavier laws after he was gone.

Contemplative

The Son of Man is within you. Following is not a chase across the sky. It is turning toward the one already at the root.

Justice

If the community silences the one who actually remembered the teaching, it will bind itself with extra rules.

Women’s witness

The historical question is not whether a later book can replace the gospels. It is whether a community believes the woman who remembered the teaching. Levi’s defense is part of the text. So is Peter’s doubt. Both still happen.

Practices

  • Listen to one person whose memory of Jesus you have been trained to doubt.
  • Drop one extra rule you laid on yourself or someone else this week.
  • Tell the good news of the kingdom in one ordinary sentence, without threat.
