Secret Book of James
Be filled
After the resurrection Jesus teaches James and Peter: become full, so that you will not be diminished; become better; the kingdom is a seed that must be received.
The setting
The risen Jesus stays with the disciples and speaks. James and Peter are named. The teaching is a farewell that will not let them stay half-awake. Fullness, persecution, prayer, and the kingdom as a living plant are the thread.
Meaning
Be filled, so you will not be in want. Those who have received life and have been filled will not be diminished. If you are empty, you can still be filled. Become better than you were. The kingdom is like a date palm shoot, like a grain of wheat: if it does not fall into the earth and die, it remains alone. Pray to the Father. Do not love the flesh more than the life that is being given to you. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed — and blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of the love they will not put down.
Fullness is the theme: be filled so you are not diminished, become better than you were, let the seed fall into the earth. Emptiness is a bowl, not a verdict. The discourse will not let the disciples stay half-awake after the resurrection appearances end.
Historical context
This discourse was treasured as Jesus’ own teaching to James, the brother who led the Jerusalem community. It was copied in the Nag Hammadi library. Read it as scripture beside John’s farewell and Matthew’s seed parables: the same Christ, filling a people so they can dwell together without fear.
The Coptic book from the Egyptian library stages the risen teacher with James and Peter after the appearances are ending. James carries weight because Jerusalem’s church remembered him as leader. The copy is fourth century. Any Greek original is older, and a precise decade would be a guess.
Seed pictures and a farewell tone put the discourse beside growth parables and beside John’s supper speeches. Hardship and prayer are part of becoming full, not a side fascination with pain. Keeping the Jerusalem name in the room matters when later churches prefer easier heroes.
Ways to interpret
Historical
A church that loved James heard Jesus leave them a rule of fullness: receive life, then become a people who can be spent.
Contemplative
Emptiness is not a verdict. It is a bowl. The work is to stay open long enough to be filled.
Justice
A seed that will not fall remains alone. Communities that refuse to spend themselves also remain alone.
Communal
Hoarded fullness is the failure mode. A people afraid of getting smaller will not let anything fall into the ground. The discourse trusts a spent life more than a guarded one.
Practices
- Name one place you are empty, and ask to be filled — without a speech.
- Do one thing that costs you a little life for someone else’s good.
- Pray as if the Father already wants to give what you are afraid to need.
